The glass door window to the Lucerne Valley Post Office lobby was broken by a would-be burglar last Friday night, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The vandalism occurred after hours on the evening of Friday, Oct. 17 and was discovered the next morning by a post office employee.

Besides the broken glass, the perpetrators unsuccessfully attempted to pry open a vent leading to the rear of the post office.

"Nothing was taken, and the suspect never reached to workroom," said Stacia Crane, public information officer for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

While some U.S. post offices are being retrofitted with surveillance cameras, no video was available of the Lucerne Valley break-in attempt.

"We do not have video of this incident," Crane said.

A large wooden board covered the broken window following the crime, and the door had not been repaired by mid-week.

An investigation is continuing.

"It is a federal crime to damage postal property," Crane said.

If you have any information about this crime, call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.
